The Sto­ry of Emi­lie’s fund

Since open­ing in 1924, our orga­ni­za­tion has relied on dona­tions both large and small. Most notably, a gift in 1929 of $1.74 mil­lion (equal to $30 mil­lion in 2023) from the estate of Chica­go phil­an­thropist Emi­lie Jane Smith played an essen­tial role in secur­ing our future. Emilie’s Fund is named in her honor.
